The Verboten – Episode 2 – Dr Holly Lawford-Smith

Holly, a senior lecturer in political philosophy at the University of Melbourne, discusses her transition into gender critical feminism. She initially focused on general philosophy and dabbled in other topics before becoming obsessed with feminism. She shares an anecdote about a reading group where she was criticized for wearing mascara, which led her to put feminism on hold for a few years. However, her interest sparked again when discussions on self-identification started gaining momentum. Holly expresses her frustration with the treatment of feminist philosopher Kathleen Stock, which ignited her anger and motivated her to fight for fairness and the right to speak up. She mentions the unfairness of bearded men piling on the discourse about womanhood, as well as incidents like the Body Shop’s condescending tweet towards JK Rowling. Interestingly, a significant amount of patronizing and condescending comments came from other feminist philosophers, which Holly finds both fascinating and disheartening.
